Bulldogs tangle with Hornets to open homestand

HUNTSVILLE -- It's State.

That's all you need to say when asked about this Saturday's basketball matchup in front of an expected capacity crowd.

The Hornets of Alabama State visit Elmore Gym to take on the Bulldogs in a 5 p.m. tipoff Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs hit the court at 3 p.m.

The ticket office opens at 1 p.m. and the doors open at 1:30.

The game starts a three-game homestand for Alabama A&M with Southern and Alcorn State coming to the Hill Jan. 21 and Jan. 23.

The Bulldogs and Hornets are each off to 1-3 starts in the SWAC season, with the Hornets in the throes of a three-game losing streak. The two teams split last year's series with the Bulldogs winning in Montgomery and ASU pulling out a win at Elmore Gym.

Quinterian McConico leads the Bulldogs with a 12.8 points per game average while pulling down 7.5 rebounds a game.

A preseason All-SWAC second team choice, he is one of four players among the league's top 10 in each category (10th in scoring and 7th in rebounding).

McConico also has a league-high - among active players - four double-doubles this season.

Fellow senior Rakiya Battle, also a preseason All-SWAC second team selection, is second in the league in assists (72) and assists per game (4.8). He led the conference in assists in each of the past two seasons.

Meanwhile, ASU is led in scoring by Rodney Simeon at 10.8 points per game. Tony Armstrong is averaging 10.3 points per game and his 6.6 rebounds per game is good for eighth in the league.
