Late Bulldogs rally comes up short against ASU

Story Links

HUNTSVILLE -- When the Bulldogs tangled with Alabama State, you had to figure it would come to a final shot.

And it did Saturday as the Hornets escaped Elmore Gym with a 57-55 win over Alabama A&M.

Actually, the referees had to check the replay monitor before ruling time had run out as players scrambled for the ball after a missed A&M shot.

A&M's Matthew Cotton took the final shot with 3 seconds to play, but it missed and ASU's Glenn Holloway pulled down the rebound.

However, as Holloway tried to move upcourt, A&M's Rakiya Battle tried to steal the ball, creating the scramble.

The Bulldogs had put on a strong rally after trailing 49-39 with about 9 minutes left to play.

They outscored the Hornets 16-8 in that span, capped by a Quinterian McConico free-throw.

Seconds later, A&M's De'Ederick Petty stole the ball, setting up the final shot by Cotton.

It wasn't the ending the Bulldogs, their fans and Head Coach Willie Hayes were hoping for.

"We played how we wanted, got the shots we wanted," he said. "But just didn't get the outcome at the end."

Petty led the Bulldogs with 19 points and he had an assist on an old-school alley-oop dunk by McConico.

McConico had 18 points and 9 rebounds and keyed a strong inside game for A&M, where the Bulldogs outscored ASU 26-12 in the paint.

"All our bigs played well tonight," Hayes said. "And we attacked them well in the paint."

The Bulldogs got out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a Petty three-pointer and a layup by McConico.

The game started to resemble a long-range shootout with both teams throwing up three-point attempts and the Hornets eventually took a lead.

But, Adrian Edwards had a rim-rattling slam on a pass from Rakiya Battle that tied the score at 18-18 with just over five minutes to play in the first half.

The two teams traded baskets before the Hornets took a 24-22 lead with 2:46 to go in the half, en route to a 30-24 halftime lead.

A&M battled back as they opened the second half with back-to-back baskets from McConico and Petty.

At 17:06, Battle's jump shot put the Bulldogs up 33-32.

While that turned out to be their last lead of the game, the Bulldogs battled up to the final shot.

"I want us to respond in a positive way," Hayes said after the tough loss. "Are we going into the next practice ready to improve? Or still down from the last game?"
