Lady Bulldogs battle Austin Peay to wire before dropping 55-52 decision

HUNTSVILLE -- DeShawna Harper scored a season-high 17 points, including 5 of A&M's final 6 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bulldogs fell 55-52 Tuesday to Austin Peay.

A&M trailed 48-44 with 3:50 to go when Jameica Cobb scored to cut the margin to 48-46.

Then, Harper stole the ball on Austin Peay's next possession and scored on a layup to tie the score at the 2:58 mark.

The Govs (3-1) retook the lead on a three-pointer with 1:45 left but A&M's Aubriana Bonner made one of two free throws for a 51-49 score with 1:22 to play.

A pair of free throws put APSU up 53-49 with 39 seconds left when Harper sunk a three-pointer with 16 seconds to play and cut the lead to 53-52.

On the ensuing possession, APSU sank two free throws with 3 seconds to go and a 55-52 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs had one last gasp when Lauren McKee launched a three-point attempt from half-court that was just wide.

In the second quarter, A&M trailed 25-20 with 2:23 to go when they went on a 7-2 run to close out the half, highlighted by four points from Cobb.

The third quarter featured a pair of big runs. A&M went on a 6-1 run to pull from a 29-29 tie to take a 35-30 lead with 5:40 to go.

Austin Peay then answered with a 6-0 run in the next minute to retake the lead at the 4:32 mark.

But Tierra Dark hit a layup with 3:38 to go for a 37-36 A&M lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way and the Lady Bulldogs took the lead into the fourth quarter.

To go with her 17 points, Harper had five steals.  Cobb added 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-2) hit the beach this week for the Florida International University Thanksgiving Tournament in Miami.

A&M will play host FIU at 11 a.m. (Central) Saturday and then either Charleston Southern or Hartford on Sunday.
