Alcorn State topples Bulldogs

LORMAN, Miss. -- Jordan Bentley had his first 100-plus yards rushing game of the season and the Bulldogs rolled up nearly 400 yards but A&M fell to Alcorn State 47-22 Saturday.

The win dropped the Bulldogs to 3-3 in the SWAC and Alcorn State improved to 4-1 and a hold on first place in the East Division.

The Bulldogs defense, ranked No. 1 in the SWAC, held down the conference's No. 1 offense in the first half, limiting Alcorn to four field goals and a touchdown.

Trailing 13-0 early in the second quarter, Nick Carden got A&M on the board with a season-long 39-yard field goal at 13:52 of the quarter.

The Braves answered with a field goal of their own about a minute-and-a-half later, taking advantage of a fumbled punt by the Bulldogs.

Late in the quarter, the Bulldogs engineered a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by a six-yard touchdwon pass from Aqeel Glass to Isaiah Bailey. Carden's point-after cut the margin to 16-10.

Bailey's outfought a pair of Alcorn defenders in the endzone to pull down the pass - his team-leading fifth TD catch of the season.

The Braves, though, added a field goal as time ran out to take a 19-10 lead into halftime.

Alcorn State scored a pair of touchdowns for a 33-10 lead before Carden kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3:54 left in the third quarter and cut the Braves' margin to 33-13. It was a season-long kick for Carden.

The eight-play, 58-yard drive was highlighted by a 41-yard pass from Aqeel Glass to Kalias Robertson. Glass hit Robertson over the middle and the senior tight end took the ball up the field, shaking off a couple of would-be tacklers along the way.

The A&M defense, for the second straight game, put points on the board early in the fourth quarter.

With Alcorn State holding a 40-13 lead, Yurik Bethune and Averee Giles brought down Braves' running back P.J. Simmons in the endzone for a safety and a 40-15 score.

The Braves tacked on another touchdown to take a 47-13 lead with 10:17 to play.

Bentley scored the final touchdown of the game with 5:18 remaining. His three-yard run capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive. Quarterback Dylan Smith passed for 33 yards and scrambled for another 29 yards in the drive.

Bentley, who has been hobbled by an injury this season, finished with 134 yards rushing, the first Bulldog to pass the 100-yard mark this season. It was his fourth career 100-plus-yard rushing game.

Bailey had five catches for 93 yards and leads the Bulldogs with 399 yards receiving this season.

Dylan Hamilton had seven tackles (2 solo, 5 assists), including half a sack and a tackle for loss.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Nov. 11, when Jackson State visits Louis Crews Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
