Softball Splits the First Day of Tennessee State Classic Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Alabama A&M University softball team split the first day of the Tiger Classic Friday in Nashville, Tenn. by falling to Iowa State 5-1 before defeating host Tennessee State 9-8.

GAME ONE: Iowa State 5, Alabama A&M 1
Iowa State plated four runs in the bottom of the second to rally for a 5-1 win over Alabama A&M Friday afternoon.

Janae Adams added a RBI single to right center to advance Kia Lang in the top of the sixth to give A&M their only run of the game. Iowa State responded in the bottom of the sixth taking advantage of an A&M throwing error to seal the win.  

GAME TWO: Alabama A&M 8, Tennessee State 6 
Tiana Sanders went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Sierra Smith went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With two quick outs in the inning, Sanders tripled to right center and after Ariel Smith walked, A. Smith advanced to third on a pass ball to bring Sanders home.

Tennessee State would take a 2-1 lead at the top of the second inning with a single up the middle and throwing error to score two Tigers. In the bottom of the second, Jessica Alferos and Tamia Lee-Barbadillo advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, followed by a left side RBI single from Sierra Smith to score Barbadillo and tie the game at two.

The teams would continue to trade points and tie at three in the third. With Viridiana Ramos on base, Barbadillo doubled to right center to score Ramos as the Lady Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third.  

In the top of the fourth, Tennessee State tied the game at four after a single RBI to shortstop. The Lady Bulldogs would quickly respond in the bottom of the fourth with a double to left side from S.Smith followed by a Lady Tigers throwing error to advance S. Smith. Lang would eventually score on a throwing error to allow a 6-4 Lady Bulldogs lead.

Both teams remained scoreless in the fifth inning, before the Lady Tigers two RBIs tied the game at six in the top of the sixth.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the next inning to win by the final margin of two runs. After Lang advanced to second on a wild pitch, Sanders singled through the left side to advance Lang to third. A. Smith reached on fielder's choice to third base which advanced Sanders to second.

Brandi Foreman came to the plate and singled through the right side to advance A. Smith to second as Sander and Lang scored to take a 8-6 lead over the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Bulldogs finish the TSU Tigers Classic Saturday with Iowa State at 10:30 a.m. and the Lady Tigers at 3:30 p.m.
