SAVANNAH, GA -- The Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning and put the ball in the left hand of Brandon Marsonek to wrap it up.
The senior stifled a Savannah State rally in the inning but was uncharacteristically wild in the seventh inning. He hit the leadoff batter, walked three other batters and gave up a two-run double before being relieved with one out.
Savannah State would score four runs in the inning en route to a 6-4 win Friday.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon Central time and close out their series Sunday at 11 a.m. Central time.
The game saw the Bulldogs (2-4) bounce back after giving up two runs in the bottom of the first.
Starter Caleb Gay settled down after the inning and shut out the Tigers (4-1) for the next five innings, before being relieved by Marsonek in the sixth.
Malcom singled in the third to score Cornelious Woods and cut Savannah State's lead to 2-1.
He picked up his second run batted in on a single to drive in Joannes Diaz with the game-tying run in the fifth inning.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the sixth as they took advantage of three Tiger errors.
Isom Ford started it off when he reached base on an error by the third baseman. Njike Hunter followed suit when he got on base also by the third-baseman's throwing error.
Then, with one out, Dalton Mitchell lashed a hit down the third base line to score Ford. He moved to second on the throw to the plate. There, the Tigers catcher misplayed the ball, allowing Hunter to score and Mitchell advance to second.
However, that was all the runs the Bulldogs would get and they held a 4-2 lead.
After a lineout to open the Tigers' sixth, Gay gave up a walk and a single to the next two batters. Head Coach Mitch Hill then called in Marsonek.
Marsonek, who entered the game with a league-leading 12 strikeouts, fanned the next two batters to end the Savannah State threat.
But then it all unraveled in the seventh inning.
Malcom and Peppers each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
