Bulldogs seniors have a night against Prairie View

HUNTSVILLE -- It was Senior Night for the Bulldogs and the upperclassmen put on a show to remember.

For the first time this season, five players scored in double figures - including three of the four seniors - in a 87-74 win over Prairie View A&M.

The four seniors - Rakiya Battle, Matthew Cotton, Adrian Edwards and Quinterian McConico - were honored in a pregame ceremony.

Battle is due to graduate in December while Cotton, Edwards and McConico have already graduated; Cotton and Edwards are currently working on their masters.

Then, they went to work on the court.

Edwards and McConico each had a double-double - Edwards scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for his first this season and McConico recorded his league-leading seventh with his 15-point, 12-rebound performance.

Cotton chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.

A couple of underclassmen hit the double-figure column, as well.

Freshman De'Ederick Petty had a career-high 24 points and junior Marcus Merriweather scored 14 points, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.

The Bulldogs jumped on Prairie View from the opening tip as they took a 7-1 lead in the first three minutes.

But the Panthers battled back to tie the score at 11-11 and even take a 14-11 lead with 11:52 left in the first half.

But the Bulldogs weren't to be denied Saturday night.

Over the next five minutes, aided by a couple three-pointers from Merriweather and Petty and some free-throws, A&M took off on a 18-6 run for a 32-17 lead.

The Bulldogs kept Prairie View at bay for the rest of the half and McConico took an outlet pass from Petty for a layup at the buzzer and a 42-29 lead.

In the second half, the Bulldogs continued to run a smooth offense and a basket by McConico at the 11-minute mark gave A&M a 20-point lead at 62-42.

However, some sloppy play resulted in turnovers and Prairie View went on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 13 points and seemingly getting some momentum with plenty of time to play.

The Bulldogs recovered even put an exclamation mark on the game.

With just under seven minutes to play, Merriweather drove to the basket and dropped a behind-the-back pass to McConico for a thunderous dunk, bringing the crowd to its feed and a 71-53 A&M lead.

A three-pointer by Ariston Johnson and a dunk by Edwards provided the final nail to run the score to 76-54 with just 5:22 to play.

The Bulldogs play their home finale on Monday against Texas Southern. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
