UAPB rallies to beat Bulldogs in doubleheader sweep

HUNTSVILLE -- The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored in the 10th inning Saturday for a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs in the first game of their doubleheader.

The Golden Lions won the nightcap 4-1 to complete the sweep.

The two teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Game 1: UAPB 5, Bulldogs 4; 10 inn.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Zeth Malcom's single to left scored Dalton Mitchell.

A&M ran the score to 3-0 in the fourth inning when Carson McGregory scored on Joannes Diaz's groundout and Mitchell drove home Brandon Whitaker from third on a single to deep short.

Blaine Milam had a strong start for the Bulldogs by scattering four hits in five shutout innings.

However, UAPB scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning when McGregory, who had a leadoff walk, scored the tying run when Diaz reached on a UAPB error.

The Golden Lions scored the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th on a two-out single.

Whitaker and Mitchell each singled twice in the game and Diaz had two runs batted in.

Brandon Marsonek struck out six batters in four innings of relief to run his league-leading strikeout total to 81.

Game 2: UAPB 4, Bulldogs 1

Wilanier Betancourt was two-for-three with a double and Cornelious Woods had a triple in the loss.

The Bulldogs, like the opener, scored first.

Their lone run came in the second inning when led off with a one-out triple to left center. Njike Hunter followed with a double to the left-center gap to score Woods.
