UNA scores late to beat Bulldogs

HUNTSVILLE -- The Bulldogs batted around in a four-run third inning, but North Alabama scored five runs in the last three innings to post a 10-6 win Wednesday over Alabama A&M.


Njike Hunter led off the A&M third with a walk. He then stole second base, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Brandon Whitaker's single.


Whitaker followed with a steal of second and reached third on an errant throw to the bag. Wilanier Betancourt walked and he, too, stole second. Whitaker scored on another error to tie the score.


With one out, Carson McGregory doubled to right field to drive in Betancourt with the go-ahead run. McGregory then reached third on the throw.


After walks to Darius Smith and, with two outs, to Joannes Diaz to load the bases, Darren Beachem singled up the middle and McGregory scored for the 4-2 lead.


The Lions bounced back with a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.


But, the Bulldogs went back on top when Beachem singled to drive home Smith and Pierre Brewton for the 6-5 lead.


UNA, though, scored four runs in the seventh and added a run in the ninth for the final 10-6 score.


The Bulldogs are on the road this weekend in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division series at Mississippi Valley State.
