Softball Falls 3-1 at MVSU

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Alabama A&M University softball team fell 3-1 Friday afternoon after Mississippi Valley took advantage of a fielding error in the fifth inning to score three unearned runs to take the victory over the Lady Bulldogs at MVSU Softball Field. With the loss, AAMU fell to 10-23 overall and 3-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings before A&M's Tiana Sanders RBI single scored Imani Largin in the top of the fourth. The Lady Bulldogs shut the Lady Devilettes out in the bottom of the fourth to hold on to a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Madi Pozzi singled to center field before she was out on a fielder's choice to allow Tamia Lee-Barbadillo to reach. At bat was Danielle Hansell who grounded out to short shop, allowing Barbadillo to advance to second but the Lady Bulldogs were put out on the next pitch.

The Lady Devilettes were looking to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With two early outs, a single and back-to-back walks allowed MVSU to get bases loaded. With the bases loaded, the Lady Devilettes took advantage of a fielding error by right field to score three unearned runs in order to take a 3-1 lead. MVSU's fly ball deep to right field would end the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Devilettes secured the 3-1 win after both teams failed to score in the remaining innings.

Caitlyn Hayden (8-10) was stuck with the loss for the Lady Bulldogs. She scattered three hits and struck out four with three walks. All three runs were unearned.

Pozzi went 2-for-3 at the plate for AAMU.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
