UAPB ends Lady Bulldogs' run in SWAC softball tournament

MONTGOMERY -- The Lady Bulldogs struck first but couldn't generate any more runs in a 6-1 loss Friday to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the SWAC softball tournament.


The loss eliminated Alabama A&M from the tournament. It was the Lady Bulldogs' second straight loss after a tourney-opening win against UAPB.


Imani Largin led off the game with a walk. She moved to second on Kia Lang's bunt single and wound up at third after Tiana Sanders reached first on a fielder's choice.


Executing a double steal with Sanders, Largin scored while Sanders was out at second.


However, that would be the lone run of the game for A&M.


UAPB answered with a four-run first inning to take control of the game.


But the Lady Bulldogs weren't without scoring opportunities later on.


Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, Brandi Foreman led off and reached first on an error. Madi Pozzi followed with a single to left and Janae Adams, running for Foreman, advanced to second. Then, Danielle Hansell bunted to load the bases. But, they were left on base as a pair of pop-ups and a line drive out ended the A&M threat.


In the sixth inning, Viridiana Ramos doubled with outs and was left stranded.


A last-gasp rally in the seventh inning with Pozzi on second, after singling to lead off the inning, and Eriel Lawson on first with one out came up short to send the Lady Bulldogs home.
