Diaz strikes out 8 in Bulldogs' loss to UT-Martin

HUNTSVILLE -- Fernando Diaz Jr. saved the best for last.

The freshman righthander turned in his best pitching performance Wednesday in the Bulldogs' final home game of the season.

He fanned eight UT-Martin batters and gave up just one earned run in six innings but A&M lost 6-0.

Blaine Milam started the game and pitched a solid first inning as a tuneup for this weekend's SWAC Eastern Division three-game series at Jackson State.

Diaz came on in the second inning and blanked the Skyhawks through the fifth inning before giving p a run in the sixth.

A&M's Caleb Gay had a pair of hits and was the only Bulldog runner to reach third base.

The Bulldogs had a brief scare in the ninth inning when centerfielder Carlton Peppers and rightfielder Dalton Mitchell collided after a hit by UT-Martin's Connor Aube. The ball rolled to the fence and Aube scored on the play.

The ball was hit toward right-center and Peppers and Mitchell both slid, their knees colliding. They were on the ground for a few moments but Peppers was able to stay in the game while Mitchell was helped off the field.

Senior pitchers Owen Stubberfield and Brandon Marsonek each pitched an inning in their final home game at Bulldog Field.

In making his 35th appearance this season, Marsonek struck out two batters to run his NCAA-leading count to 115. He also leads the nation in appearances and innings pitched (94.1).

Fellow senior Cornelious Woods played his final home game at third base for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and Jackson State play Friday at 6 p.m.; Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
