Bulldogs blanked by South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Bulldogs wrapped up their three-game foray Saturday against FBS competition.

While they came away winless, including Saturday's 45-0 loss at the University of South Alabama, the Bulldogs came away learning what it will take to win.

And one of the things they learned is that they must avoid "self-inflicted wounds," according to Head Coach James Spady.

"[It was] self-inflicted wounds," he said. "We talk about it every week; we talk about it every day - trying to avoid the things that are going to beat us that we do to ourselves."

After holding the Jags to a field goal in the first series of the game, A&M cranked up its offense and moved downfield.

However, Nick Carden's 20-yard field goal attempt was blocked and returned for a touchdown to give South Alabama a 10-0 lead - and they didn't look back.

On their next possession, keyed by a 55-yard pass play, the Jags took a 17-0 lead.

Then, another A&M self-inflicted wound resulted in a South Alabama touchdown.

Octayvious Miles fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Jags recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown and a 24-0 lead late in the first quarter.

"I've said all along, we have to stay away from the self-inflicted wounds," Spady said. "When you turn the football over, that's a self-inflicted wound.

"There's no getting around that, we have to stop that. We have to fix that."

And the Bulldogs hope to apply those lessons next Saturday when Texas Southern visits The Hill for the Louis Crews Classic.

In Saturday's game, quarterbacks Aqeel Glass and Damion May combined for 18 of 28 passing for 100 yards and one interception.

There were glimpses of an exciting running attack as Trevon Walters carried seven times for 36 yards before leaving the game.

And, there is the anticipated return of the offense's main weapon in Jordan Bentley.

Defensively, the Bulldogs shut out South Alabama in the fourth quarter and, for the game, held the Sun Belt Conference member to 158 yards rushing.

Linebacker Kenneth Davis collected 13 tackles (six solo, seven assists) and Yurik Bethune, playing his first college game in his hometown, had seven tackles, including 1 1/2 tackles for loss and half a sack.

Kickoff next Saturday is 6 p.m. For tickets, visit www.aamutix.com or call 256-372-4700.
