GAMEDAY: Alabama A&M basketball teams host UAPB in SWAC doubleheader

HUNTSVILLE, AL– The Alabama A&M University men's and women's basketball teams will play their first Southwestern Athletic Conference home games of the season on Saturday when the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a doubleheader at Elmore Gym. The women tip at 4:00 p.m., followed by the men at 6:00 p.m.

Women's Preview

WHAT TO KNOW
 - The Lady Bulldogs (5-8, 0-2 SWAC) fell to Jackson State Lady Tigers, 59-43 on Wednesday in Jackson, MS.
 
- DeShawna Harper topped the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and contributed two steals and one assist. Kanisha Tharpe scored seven points and added a team-high seven rebounds. Jameica Cobb contributed six points on the night.   

- Nigeria Jones leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 8.2 ppg. Tharpe leads the team in rebounds with 6.5 rpg. Lauren McKee leads the Lady Bulldogs in both assists (3.4 apg) and steals (1.4 spg).
 
- AAMU tied a season-high 22 forced turnovers against Grambling State, the most turnovers the Lady Bulldogs forced in a game since Alabama A&M forced 22 against Jacksonville State in non-conference play on Dec. 12.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
 - UAPB (3-8, 1-0 SWAC) won their first conference game this past week on the road, defeating Mississippi Valley State, 64-59. The Golden Lions had lost their previous eight games coming into that match.
 
- Faith Ohanta leads the Golden Lions in both scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounds (8.9 rpg).
 
- The Lady Bulldogs have loss the last two matchups against the Golden Lions, with the last matchup being at Elmore Gym on Feb. 6, 2017, 65-55, last season.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bulldogs will be back at home to take on Mississippi Valley on Jan. 8. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.


Men's Preview

WHAT TO KNOW
 - AAMU (1-14, 1-1 SWAC) dropped a SWAC road game at Jackson State, 59-56, Wednesday evening.
 
- Arthur Johnson led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points and totaled three rebounds and three assist against Jackson State. Andre Kennedy tallied 10 points and led with a team-high  five rebounds.
 
- The Bulldogs held a slim 33-29 edge in rebounds, while topping Jackson State 4-1 in fast break scoring.

- De'Ederick Petty paces the Bulldogs in scoring with 10.9 points-per-game.
 
- Kennedy leads the Bulldogs in rebounding and is fifth in the SWAC with 5.9 rebounds per game.
 
- Alabama A&M is shooting 39-percent from the field, 33-percent from the three-point line and 66-percent from the charity stripe.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
 - UAPB (1-14, 1-0 SWAC) won their first game of the season on the road against Mississippi Valley, 80-71.
 
- Martaveous McKnight paces the Golden Lions at 27 points-per-game. Trent Steen averages 22 ppg and six rebounds-per-game. Dwain Whitfield and Joe-Randle Toliver both lead the team with seven rpg.
 
- In the last matchup, The Golden Lions defeated the Bulldogs, 65-49, last year in Huntsville.
