Women’s Basketball Falls, 57-48, to Arkansas-Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark.— The Alabama A&M women's basketball team was handed a 57-48 loss Monday night by the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions in the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

The Lady Lions (4-16, 2-8 SWAC) jumped out to an early 12-2 lead in the first seven minutes of the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs (8-13, 2-7) responded well to cut that lead to 14-10 heading into the second quarter. 

Both teams continued to trade baskets throughout the second frame with the Lady Bulldogs taken a 16-14 lead with 7:57 on the clock. Alabama A&M would hold onto the lead until a UAPB jumper put the Lady Lions ahead by two with 3:28 remaining. UAPB extended their lead and held a three-point advantage, 26-23, at the half.

The third quarter was also very even, before the Arkansas-Pine Bluff extended their lead to eight at the end of the third quarter.

AAMU upped the pressure in the fourth quarter with DeShawna Harper opening up with a three-pointer to cut the Lady Lions deficit to five. The Lady Bulldogs would get within one, 47-46, with 4:44 to play. UAPB responded with a 10-2 run and went on to record the 57-48 victory.

Nigeria Jones led the team in points (12) and assists (4), while Kanisha Tharpe recorded eight points and eight rebounds throughout the night. 

Destiny Brewton led the Lady Lions with 14 points and added five rebounds. Faith Ohanta had 12 points for UAPB and also added five rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Itta Bena, Miss. on Monday to face Mississippi Valley. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
