Women’s Basketball Grabs 71-64 Victory over Grambling State

HUNTSVILLE---The Alabama A&M women's basketball team grabbed a 71-64 victory over Grambling State Thursday evening in Elmore Gym.

The win improves the Lady Bulldogs to 11-17 on the season and 6-11 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Lady Tigers fall to 15-13 overall and 12-5 in league play.

Alabama A&M jumped out to a 12-6 run with 5:12 on the clock in the first period. Grambling responded with a 10-1 run to take a two-point lead, 16-14, with 1:33 remaining in the quarter. Nigeria Jones connected for a three-pointer followed by a jumper from Ashlyn Dotson to give the Lady Bulldogs a 19-13 lead at the end of the first.

The Lady Bulldogs maintained their lead in the second quarter and gained a 40-32 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 10, 55-45, with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter. Grambling responded with a 9-0 run to cut the Lady Bulldogs deficit to one heading into the fourth.

In the final frame, both teams opened with three pointers before a Shakyla Hill layup and free throw would give Grambling a 60-58 lead.

With 1:34 on the clock, Tierra Dark hit a jumper to give the Lady Bulldogs a one-point lead, 65-64, followed by four free throws from AAMU to secure the 71-64 victory.  

Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double-digits with Jones leading with 22 points and three assists. Natalie Collins added 12 points, while Aubriana Bonner had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Dotson added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Hill led all scorers with 35 points, including 14 points in the first half. Hill also led the Lady Tigers with 12 rebounds and added four assists. Jazmine Boyd contributed 16 points for Grambling.

The Lady Bulldogs close out the 2017-2018 season on Saturday when the host Jackson State Lady Tigers for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
