Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. MVSU on Senior Day

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama A&M University softball team claimed both sides of a Friday doubleheader over Mississippi Valley State during Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at Lady Bulldog Field. The Lady Bulldogs (19-12, 9-2 SWAC) defeated the Devilettes (7-27, 2-8 SWAC) 7-6 and 10-6 in game one and two, respectively on Senior Day.

GAME 1
Sparked by a Tiana Sanders solo shot in the first, Alabama A&M raced out to a 5-0 advantage after four innings. The Lady Bulldogs collected a pair of runs in the second thanks in large part to errors by the Mississippi Valley defense, and Tamia-Lee Barbadillo hit a two-run double in the fourth.

Lauren Hayden carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning for Alabama A&M, but the Devilettes found success in the top of the fifth. Natalie Bishop broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single and later scored on a RBI single from Kailyn Dunn. Jodeci Afoa-Tuia followed with a three-run home run to draw within one.

Small ball aided Alabama A&M's response, as Sanders and Madi Pozzi singled to start the frame. Though Sanders was thrown out during a double steal, Pozzi later moved to third on a Danielle Hansell single and swiped home plate. AAMU added another run in the sixth and despite a late rally by MVSU, Hayden managed to seal the complete game win and improve to 10-1 on the year.

Hayden allowed nine hits and five earned runs. Sanders was 3-for-3.

GAME 2
Alabama A&M appeared on its way to a one-sided win after tagging MVSU starter Chandler Ellis for seven runs in the second inning. Alexis Bates started the rally with a two-run double. Barbadillo added a RBI single, and after Lavarsha Walker scored via error, Kia Lang doubled to bring in Barbadillo. Sanders followed with a RBI single, and Ariel Smith capped matters with a double to plate Sanders.

However, the Devilettes made up some ground in the third as DeShonte Smith slapped a double to center field to score Afoa-Tuia. Mississippi Valley scrapped together two more runs before ending the inning down 7-3.

After another Lang RBI single, MVSU pulled to within two in the fifth as Afoa-Tuia scored on a gaffe in centerfield, and Smith and Jezabelle Quintana hit back-to-back RBI singles. Barbadillo would put matters away for AAMU with a two-run single.

Barbadillo was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Smith led MVSU with a 3-for-4 line at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Imani Largin picked up the win, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.0 inning
