Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of MVSU

HUNTSVILLE— The Alabama A&M baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State with a 15-5 victory on Sunday at Bulldog Field.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs posted most of their runs in the second inning as four different Bulldogs had multiple-hit games led by Raymond Santiago, who went 5-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles and one run scored as the Bulldogs third baseman.

Jonathan Smith IIand Carlton Peppers each had two hits in four at-bats, and added two runs and one RBI a piece to their totals.  Dalton Mitchell also had a big afternoon. He went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored including a double in the bottom of the fifth.

Carl Parker and JT O'Reel each had one hit and two runs scored. O'Reel also had one RBI.

Down 1-0, Alabama A&M tied the game in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Mitchell to score Smith. The Bulldogs would then add nine runs in the bottom of the second.

With one out, Parker hit a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Santiago RBI single scored Parker before Smith hit by pitch put him on base. Peppers would then single to centerfield to advance Smith to second and Santiago home to make it 3-1. A wild pitch would advance both Peppers and Smith before O'Reel reached on fielding error to advance Peppers to third and score Smith.

Up 4-1, O'Reel reached on a fielding error by shortstop to advance Peppers to third and score Smith. O'Reel stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to score Peppers. O'Reel would then advance home after a single up the middle from Carson McGregory. Mitchell would follow with a single to the left side and advanced to second with McGregory on third. After a groundout, Wilanier Betancourt was hit by pitch. With bases loaded, Parker reached on a throwing error as Mitchell and McGregory scored. The Bulldogs last two runs in the second would come after a single from Santiago scored Parker and Betancourt to put AAMU up, 8-1.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third before MVSU added a run in the top of the fourth.

Leading 12-2, Polinsky singled up the middle in the fifth to score Mitchell before a single from Smith would add another run.

A three RBI homer inside the park from the Devils in the top of the seventh cut the deficit to nine, 14-5. AAMU would add their final run of the game in the seventh inning after a double from Santiago for a 15-5 cushion in seven innings.

Jose Figueroa (1-4) started and got the win in 7.0 complete innings. He allowed five hits and five runs with three walks and eight strikeouts.
