Lady Bulldogs Fall Short Against Texas Southern, 8-7

MONTGOMERY, Ala.--- Alabama A&M Softball team fell short to Texas Southern Thursday afternoon, 8-7, in the 2018 SWAC Softball Championship Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs (22-20, 11-9 SWAC) continue tournament play in Montgomery, Ala. and face Prairie View A&M at 9 AM, on Friday, May 11.  For live stats click HERE.   

How it Happened
AAMU (22-20) found success early on against Texas Southern as Alexis Bates dropped a single into shallow left to score Tamia Lee-Barbadillo, who led off with a single. 

Texas Southern responded in the bottom of the second, with a double to deep left center and tied the game. 

In the top of the fourth, Lauren Walker singled home Alferos. A fielder's choice allowed Danielle Hansell to score. Tiana Sanders followed with a two-run single, and though TSU got a force out at home, Bates found a gap in left with a RBI single in the next at-bat, plating Sanders, to put the AAMU up 6-1 in the top of the fourth.

Texas Southern responded in the fourth with a 2 RBI right field homer followed by a RBI double to draw the Lady Tigers within two.

The Lady Tigers tied the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Bulldogs added another run in the top of the seventh when Raina Mayfield was called safe after an interference at home.

Down 7-6, Texas Southern (24-16-1), tied the game with a RBI single to score. A Lady Tigers bunt forced a fielder's choice that allowed them to gain the winning run.

Imani Largin took the loss, allowing the winning run in relief of Lauren Hayden. Hansell went 3-for-3, and Sanders and Bates each had two hits and two RBI.

TSU's Tyra Williams earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief work, scattering five hits.
