HUNTSVILLE- The Alabama A&M softball team picked up a split in a doubleheader at Lady Bulldog Field Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Alabama State 5-2 in the first game, but fell to the Lady Hornets, 15-3 in the second game.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 20-18 overall and 10-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and it is the first time in years that they have had 20 wins.
In game one, Alabama State (20-28, 10-7) scored first in the top of the first and inning, but Danielle Hansell answered back with a run in the bottom of the second inning. In the third, Ariel Smith advanced to third and then scored on a fielding error by ASU to tie the game, 2-2. In the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a RBI double by Tiana Sanders.

AAMU tacked on their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth after Danielle Hansell's sacrifice bunt scored Imani Largin and Jessica Alferos scored off a fielder's choice for the 5-2 victory.

Largin picked up the win on the mound, going 5.0 innings and only giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and one strikeout. Lauren Hayden finished the game, going 2.0 innings and only giving up one hit.

Sanders went 2-of-3 with one RBI and a double to lead the Lady Bulldogs offensively.

In game two, the Lady Hornets scored first again, getting two runs across in the top of the first inning. AAMU answered back in the bottom of the first, when Sanders grounded out to shortstop and Kia Lang advanced home. After the Hornets extended their lead to 6-1 with four runs in the top of the second inning, the Lady Bulldogs cut the deficit to three in the second after Alferos RBI double scored Madi Pozzi and Alferos later scored.

Leading 6-3, Alabama State extended their lead to 8-3 in the fourth inning with a two-run home run, before a two-run double in the top of the fifth pushed their lead to 10-3. ASU would then add five more runs in the fifth inning, which included two doubles and a single to secure the 15-3 win.

The Lady Bulldogs finished game two with three hits, with Pozzi and Alferos leading the way going 1-for-2 at the plate and each securing a run.

They will be back in action again Sunday to wrap up the regular season at Lady Bulldog field for another doubleheader. They will take on Alabama State at 1 p.m. and Mississippi Valley at 4 p.m.
