Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dotson scores 16, Alabama A&M tops Jackson State in SWAC opener

HUNTSVILLE — Ashlyn Dotson was never worried.

The Alabama A&M center had seen this story before.

For the Alabama A&M women's basketball team, close games and exciting finishes have become a recent trend — and one that's played out nicely for the Bulldogs.

Dotson poured in 16 points as Alabama A&M held off Jackson State 58-55 Saturday night to open the SWAC schedule.

The win was Alabama A&M's fourth straight, with all four having close, dramatic finishes.

"It seems like that's kind of become our thing," Dotson said. "Winning close games like this, against quality opponents, kind of shows the character of this team. We're finding ways to win."

Alabama A&M (6-6, 1-0 in SWAC) led by seven at halftime, but Jackson State (4-8, 0-1) charged back in the second half, tying the score with about a minute remaining in the fourth period.

But Lauren McKee and Dotson were clutch from the foul line in the closing seconds, making three straight free throws to preserve the lead.

Carnethia Brown finished with 11 points for Alabama A&M, making three 3-pointers. McKee added eight points.
Kaisah Lucky led Jackson State with 20 points.

"It was crazy in the locker room (after the game)," Dotson said. "Everyone was excited, just enjoying the moment. We wanted to get off to a good start in the conference. Making that happen, and winning our fourth in a row, was a nice way to do that."
