Bulldogs Secure First Win of the Year in 80-66 Win Over Troy

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ Alabama A&M men's basketball finished their Monday night match against in-state opponent Troy University by recording their highest scoring total on the year so far, an 80-66 win in their 2019-20 home opener.

Freshman Cameron Alford led all scorers in the game as he recorded a new career-high with 23 points, along with nine rebounds and five assists as Alabama A&M (1-5, 0-0 SWAC) defeated the Trojans (1-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) by shooting a season-high 49.1 percent form the field and 40.7 percent from distance.

Along with Alford, three other Bulldogs scored in double figures as Jalen Johnson, Brandon Miller and TJ Parham all added 11 points of their own.

Tha Bulldogs opened the first half trailing by as many as 10 points, however used a 14-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 23-21 with seven minutes left in the half.

After going into halftime ahead for the first time this season 36-34, Alabama A&M carried their momentum and shooting touch into the second half to outscore Troy 44-32 in the final frame. The Bulldogs also stretched their lead to 78-61, their biggest lead of the young season.

Zay Williams led the Trojans in scoring with 13, while Charles Norman and Ty Gordon were the only others in double figures with 10 apiece.

  • Free throws: A&M shot 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) from the free throw line on the night, while Troy went 16-of-21 (76.2 percent).
  • Turnovers: A&M turned the ball over nine times, while giving up only 11 points off of their miscues. Troy committed ten turnovers, allowing 20 Bulldog points off of their turnovers.
  • Bench points: The Bulldog bench outscored Troy's bench 29-20. Jalen Johson (13) and Brandon Miller (11) both scored double digits off the bench.

Up Next
The next game for the men's program will be on Saturday, Dec. 7, as they host Ohio Valley Conference opponent Jacksonville State University in Elmore Gymnasium for their second straight home game. The in state contest will tip at 7 p.m.
