Harper pours in 18, Women's Basketball holds off UAPB

HUNTSVILLE — DeShawna Harper has found her zone.

Her Alabama A&M basketball teammates hope that does not change.

For good reason.

When Harper plays at a high level, good things happen for Alabama A&M.

The sophomore guard proved that once again, tossing in 18 points with six rebounds as Alabama A&M held off Arkansas-Pine Bluff 60-54 Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

Harper's 18 points matched her season high for the third time, including the past two SWAC contests.

"(Harper) gave us some really good minutes this weekend on both ends of the floor," Alabama A&M coach Margaret Richards said. "She's an athlete and that's the type of play we expect from her."
With SWAC play now heading into its final stretch, this was an important weekend for Alabama A&M (11-11, 6-5 in SWAC).

The Bulldogs responded.

Using turnovers to score in transition, Alabama A&M opened the third period with a 19-4 run to build a double-figure cushion.

Alabama A&M forced 11 Arkansas-Pine Bluff turnovers, including 11 on steals.

Harper led Alabama A&M with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Nigeria Jones scored 16 points with six rebounds and three steals.

Kenya Pye added nine points for the Bulldogs.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-14) made things interesting late in the game, pulling within two with 2:14 remaining.

Harper made sure the Golden Lions could get no closer, making a layup in transition, and then following with a steal and a pair of clutch free throws to help Alabama A&M slam the door.

"Basketball is a game of runs, and when you're backed into a tough spot, you've got to stay disciplined," Richards said. "I thought we did a good job of that.

"Now we've got to get ready for the next game," Richards added. "That's the approach we're going to take as we head down the stretch. You've got to take it one game at a time and not get caught looking ahead."
