Hovermill fans 9, Alabama A&M baseball tops rival Alabama State

MONTGOMERY — Michael Hovermill loves Fridays.

This season, it's a day that has been good for the Alabama A&M right-handed pitcher.

That trend continued in Montgomery.

Hovermill struck out nine as Alabama A&M topped rival Alabama State 5-4 Friday night to open a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Alabama State (9-9, 4-2 in SWAC) hosts Alabama A&M (5-14, 5-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m.

In Alabama A&M's first two conference series, against Alcorn State and Jackson State, Hovermill took the mound on Fridays and was dominant on the mound.

It seems the right-hander has found his spot in the rotation.

Making his third-straight Friday start, Hovermill pitched deep into the game against Alabama State while keeping the Hornets' bats cool for most of the afternoon.

Hovermill got the pitching win, holding Alabama State to nine hits with one earned run while walking two in eight innings.
Fernando Diaz Jr. got the save, striking out one while giving up one hit in the ninth inning.

Alabama A&M led the entire game, scoring two runs in the top of the first and two more in the second.
Jonathan Smith II and Richard Polinsky led Alabama A&M, with both players finishing with three hits and two RBIs. Raymond

Santiago and Pierre Brewton each added two hits.
