Hovermill hurls complete-game shutout, AAMU baseball tops Mississippi Valley

HUNTSVILLE — The streak continues.
 
Jonathan Smith II hit a homer and Michael Hovermill delivered a strong performance on the mound as Alabama A&M topped Mississippi Valley State 6-0 Friday afternoon to open a Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
 
With the victory, Alabama A&M extends its winning streak to four games.
 
"We played well," Alabama A&M coach Manny Lora said. "There's a lot to be pleased about."
 
Very true.
 
Alabama A&M (10-20, 6-4 in SWAC) won almost every facet of the game.
 
On the mound, Hovermill (4-3) was strong. The junior held Mississippi Valley (6-10, 5-5) to six hits while striking out two in the complete-game shutout. He only walked two.
 
"Everyone played well today," Hovermill said. "We're playing well right now."
 
Alabama A&M gave its starting pitcher plenty of run support.
 
Smith drove in Pierre Brewton with an RBI double the bottom of the second inning to give Alabama A&M a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, the Bulldogs rallied for four runs to stretch the cushion to five.
 
Brandon Moore hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.
 
Smith led Alabama A&M with two hits and two RBIs, while Brewton had two hits and an RBI. Dillon Roop, Stephan Soto, Kyle Redmond and Will Hampson each added a hit for the Bulldogs.
 
Alabama A&M hosts Mississippi Valley State on Saturday for Game 2 of the three-game SWAC series.
