Texas Southern uses second-half run to top women's basketball

HUNTSVILLE — Niya Mitchell recorded a double-double as Texas Southern topped Alabama A&M 56-45 Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

The game was close for the entire first half, with Texas Southern taking a 28-26 lead into halftime.

But in the third period, Alabama A&M fell into an offensive lull, and Texas Southern capitalized, holding the Bulldogs to just three points while building a double-figure lead.

Alabama A&M tried to rally back late in the game, but the deficit was too deep.

Mitchell led Texas Southern with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

DeShawna Harper paced Alabama A&M with 18 points, while Tierra Dark scored 10.

Alabama A&M travels to Jackson State on Thursday.
