Alabama State wins pitcher's duel to take series opener at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE — Michael Hovermill was sharp on the mound.

Unfortunately, the Alabama A&M pitching ace did not get the offensive support needed.

Alabama State capitalized on a couple of Alabama A&M fielding errors, topping the Bulldogs 4-2 Thursday afternoon to open a three-game SWAC series.

The opening game of this rivalry series was a showcase of two of the SWAC's premiere starting pitchers.
The contest lived up to the billing.

For Alabama A&M, Hovermill was sharp. The junior took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but trailed 2-0 because of a fielding error in the top of the second inning that allowed Alabama State 21-16, 15-3 in SWAC) to push a pair of runs across the plate.

Hovermill (4-4) held Alabama State to six hits and three earned runs while striking out four in the complete game.

Even though Hovermill was good on the mound, the Alabama A&M ace was bested by Alabama State left-hander Jeremy Rivera.

Rivera (6-2) held Alabama A&M (12-29, 8-10) to seven hits while striking out nine in his first collegiate complete game.

Alabama State took a 2-0 lead in the second, but Alabama A&M tried to rally back late. Raymond Santiago drove in a run on the sixth, and Will Hampson hit a solo homer — his second in as many games — in the seventh.

Justin Lott led Alabama A&M with two hits.

Alabama A&M hosts Alabama State on Friday at 3 p.m.
