Lady Bulldogs clinch SWAC East Division with weekend sweep of Alcorn

A great pitching duel between Paige Taylor of Alcorn State and Lauren Hayden of Alabama A&M in the opening game of the doubleheader saw a close game throughout. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs picked up a 1-0 victory over the Lady Braves during the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. 
 
An RBI double by center fielder Tia Davis in the bottom of the second inning was the difference in the ball game. 
 
Several Bulldogs recorded hits including Alyssa Lopez (1-3), Ariel McAtee (1-2, run scored) and Tia Davis (1-2, RBI). 
 
Hayden (8-8) was great on the mound pitched a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and only giving up one hit. 
 
For Alcorn, Taylor picked up the loss (9-9), while Ashley Arnold was the lone Brave to record a hit. 
 
In game two, Alcorn came out strong and gained three hits in the opening inning. The Braves later scored on an RBI double by first baseman Victoria Tyler. 
 
However, the Bulldogs responded in the second to score three runs when Madison Pozzi homered to deep center with one out to drive in three. Alabama A&M added another score in the third on an RBI single by Shelby Scrivnor.
 
In the fourth, Alcorn began to rally by scoring three on four hits, but the Bulldogs responded by scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Ariel McAtee for the final score of the ball game. 
 
Multiple Bulldogs contributed offensively, including Danielle Hansell (1-3), Tamia Lee-Barbadillo (2-3, 2 runs scored), Scrivnor (2-3, 1 RBI), McAtee (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run scored) and Pozzi (1-3, 3 RBI, HR)
 
Alyssa Lopez started the game for the Bulldogs and pitched four innings, while Lauren Hayden (9-8) came in in relief to pick up the victory. 
 
Ambria Dorsey picked up the loss for the Braves, while Paige Taylor came in for relief. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action for the SWAC Tournament, which begins on May 8, in Montgomery, Alabama where they will be the top seed from the East.
