Selma holds off late Alabama A&M rally in baseball exhibition contest

HUNTSVILLE — Derrick Syvle delivered a strong performance on the mound as Selma held off a potential comeback bid as the Bulldogs topped Alabama A&M 6-5 Tuesday afternoon in a baseball exhibition game.

Capitalizing on six Alabama A&M errors, Selma (10-4) built a two-run lead by the bottom of the seventh inning.

Daniel Tart drove in a pair of runs for Alabama A&M (12-20) in the bottom of the seventh with a double off the left-field wall to tie the score. Justin Lott followed an RBI single to take the lead.

The lead, however, did not last long.

Ricky Butts hit a two-run homer over the left-field wall in the top of the eighth, and Alexander Humphrey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to give Selma the lead for good.

Alabama A&M tried to rally back in the bottom of the ninth. After Jonathan Smith II scored on a Selma fielding error, Justin Lott followed with a two-out single, but the potential game-tying run was called out at third base.

Tart led Alabama A&M at the plate with two hits and three RBIs, while Lott had three hits and an RBI.

Syvle got the pitching win for Selma (10-4). The hard-throwing right-hander struck out seven while holding Alabama A&M to six hits through seven innings. Trey Clark recorded the save.

Alabama A&M travels to Alcorn State on Friday to begin a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
