Hovermill hurls complete-game shutout, AAMU baseball tops Mississippi Valley

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Michael Hovermill made his final pitching start of the season a memorable one.

The Alabama A&M right-hander hurled a complete-game shutout as the Bulldogs topped Mississippi Valley State 1-0 Friday afternoon to open a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Hovermill (5-5) was sharp.

The junior held Mississippi Valley State (8-25, 6-15 in SWAC) to four hits while striking out three and walking none.
The complete-game shutout was Hovermill's second of the season.

Alabama A&M (14-35, 10-11) need a strong performance from Hovermill.

Even though Alabama A&M tagged Mississippi Valley starting pitcher Nicholas Johnson for nine hits, the Bulldogs struggled to provide their ace pitcher with run support.

Through eight innings, the game was scoreless.

That changed, however, in the top of the ninth inning when Kyle Redmond pushed Stephan Soto across the plate with an RBI double.

Redmond, Jalen Ford and Daniel Tart each led Alabama A&M with two hits.

Mississippi Valley hosts Alabama A&M today at 2 p.m. for Game 2 of the SWAC series.
