Bulldogs Continue to Improve on Second Day of Fall Camp

8/5/2019 4:24:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE __ Alabama A&M's second day of fall camp was another good productive day according to head coach Connell Maynor, as the Bulldogs prepare for the September 1 season opener against Morehouse.

"Day two was a good practice, we got a lot of reps in," he said. "For the most part the guys are enthusiastic and flying around. We had some busts here and there, but it was a good practice for day two, and we're moving towards getting ready for the opening game."

When asked about the new coaches on staff and how they are adjusting, Coach Maynor gave high praise.

"The coaches are doing what we hired them to do. We did a thorough job of investigating during the interview process and they're performing like we thought they would. They're doing a great job so far, and now they have built relationships with the players from the spring that will continue to grow moving forward."

Though the team is bringing back a number of experienced returners on both sides of the ball, a big difference from last year's team will be the defensive scheme brought on board by new defensive coordinator Granville Eastman. Eastman is bringing aboard a 4-2-5 scheme, which is designed to utilize the team's speed and versatility in the defensive backfield. The scheme uses an extra defensive back to match with the speed of today's offenses. Defensive backs coach Kenyatta Mccoy, who joins the staff after previously coaching at North Carolina Central was also added on this season, and has already made an impact throughout the program.

Returning senior defensive back Mike Mills gave some input on his views of the defensive unit so far.

"I think we're adjusting pretty well. It's early so of course we're still learning, but I definitely think it will be a good year for our unit," Mills said. "We plan on getting after offenses and we have good coverages behind it. We're flying around and pursuing the ball. These coaches are doing a great job of teaching us and we look forward to making plays this upcoming season."

Senior safety Desmond Fletcher echoed the positive outlook and also described the relationship building between the new defensive coaches and the players.

"We're really enjoying the new defensive coaches so far in camp," he stated. "They know the system and play calls very well and are constantly teaching us new techniques to use during the games. The balance of personalities they bring to us all works and fits perfectly."

Alabama A&M opens the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon, September 1 at the inaugural Black College Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio against Morehouse College.
