Alabama A&M Basketball Hosts Rival Alabama State on Saturday in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. __ The Alabama A&M men's and women's basketball teams will look to move up in conference standings as they host long-time rival Alabama State on Saturday at the Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

The doubleheader is set for a 3 p.m. tip with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 5 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the AAMU Athletics YouTube channel, as well as live stats, which can be found online at aamusports.com. This will mark the first of two contests this season between the in-state foes, as A&M will play the return game at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Feb. 15 (3 p.m. CT)

The Lady Bulldogs (6-9 overall, 2-2 SWAC) are looking to continue their two game conference win streak and win their second straight over the rival Lady Hornets.

Leading scorer Dariuana Lewis (17.0 points, 10.1 rebounds per game) is coming off an excellent weekend where she was tabbed SWAC Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.5 assists in wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley. Guard Deshawna Harper is also averaging double figure scoring for the Lady Bulldogs, with numbers of 12.5 points and a team leading 2.3 steals per game.

The Lady Hornets (5-10 overall, 2-2 SWAC) enter the contest after falling to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 73-62, on Monday night. ASU is led by Ayana Emmanuel, who is leading the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game and Jayla Crawford, who is second on the team with 10.5 points per game. 
Freshman Aniyah Smith also finished in double-figures in both contests last week, and leads all SWAC freshmen in both scoring and rebounding on the season.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs (5-10 overall, 2-2 SWAC) are looking to rebound after a loss at home to Mississippi Valley on Monday night. Guard Cameron Alford leads the Bulldogs in points (14.3) and rebounds (4.9) on the season, including a freshman record setting 32-point performance against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Guard Garrett Hicks is second in scoring, averaging 9.4 points per game, while freshman big man EJ Williams is averaging double figures in conference play at 10.8 points per SWAC contest.

Saturday will mark the 114th meeting between the two men's programs, with the Hornets winning eight of last ten including seven straight.
 

Tobi Ewuosho continues to lead Alabama State in both scoring and rebounding heading into the third week of conference play. The senior is averaging 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season and has scored in double figures in 14 of the 17 games the Hornets have played in 2019-20. Senior Leon Daniels is also averaging in double figures in conference play at 10.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
