Men's Basketball Falls to the Hornets of Alabama State in Birmingham

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. __ Alabama A&M fell to rival Alabama State 65-56, at the Bill Harris Arena on Saturday night.

Guard Cameron Alford led all scorers once again with 19 points and seven rebounds, along with Evan Wiley who finished with 11 points in his first start of the season.


First Half
  • Alabama State started the scoring off for the game, before the Bulldogs responded and the teams traded buckets for the next few minutes of the half, with the Hornets going up 10-6 at the 15-minute mark.
  • After being down 12-7 with 13:24 to go in the half, The Bulldogs went on a 8-2 run over a three minute span to take the lead at 15-14.
  • The two teams continued to play a tight game as a dunk by center EJ Williams and a three pointer by Brandon Miller put the Bulldogs up 22-20 with just over seven minutes to play in the half.
  • The game remained tight, however the Hornets used an eight point run to close the half and go into the locker room 35-28.
Second Half
  • Alabama A&M fought back in the beginning of the second half, with Cameron Alford scoring the first eight points for the Bulldogs in the first four minutes of the second half.
  • The Hornets responded with a run of their own, finding themselves up 48-40 with 12:24 to play in the game.
  • The Bulldogs climbed back within three points just under six minutes to play on back-to-back baskets by Evan Wiley to put the score at 51-48.
  • Freshman Cameron Tucker pulled the deficit back to three with 4:34 to play, followed by three pointers by both teams to put the score at 56-53.
  • After that basket, the Bulldogs fell victim to a 9-3 run to close the game, and lost to the Hornets by a final of 65-56.
Post-Game Notes 
  • Alabama A&M starters: Cameron Tucker, Garrett Hicks, Cameron Alford, Evan Wiley, EJ Williams
  • The Bulldogs shot 24-for-54 (44.4 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from the three-point line and 6-for-13 from the charity stripe (46.2 percent).
  • Alabama A&M outscored Alabama State in the lane on Saturday night, scoring points 32 in the paint compared to the 18 by the Hornets.
  • The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle as well by recording 38 rebounds to the 30 from ASU. The Bulldogs scored ten second chance points on 12 offensive rebounds, while the Hornets scored two second chance points off of eight offensive boards.
  • The Bulldog bench was out scored by the Hornet bench 14-13.
  • Turnovers: A&M scored 12 points off of nine turnovers, while ASU scored 17 points off of 14 Bulldog turnovers.
Up Next
The Bulldogs will have a week to prepare before they head back on the road to face Alcorn State on Jan. 25 (5 p.m. CT) and Southern on Jan. 27 (7:30 p.m. CT) before returning home for two games starting on Feb. 1 as they host Texas Southern.
