Women's Basketball Win Streak Comes to an End at Southern

Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. __ Offensive struggles plague the Lady Bulldogs as they score only 23 points in the second half on Monday night and fall to the Lady Jaguars 55-46.

Forward Dariauna Lewis recorded 11 points and seven rebounds while guard Deshawna Harper finished with 10 points and two steals as Alabama A&M (8-10 overall, 4-3 SWAC) gave up 33 points in the second half and lose their first conference game since Jan. 6.


Quarter-by-Quarter
  • Alabama A&M opened the scoring in the game on a steal and fast break score form Deshawna Harper and found themselves up 7-6 at the seven-minute mark before finding the game tied at nine with 6:40 to play in the first. Neither school found much separation for the remainder of the quarter, as the teams again tied at 14 and ended the opening frame tied 16-16.
  • The Jaguars broke the tie with the first basket of the quarter before Nigeria Jones responded with a three to give the Lady Bulldogs a 19-18 lead at the 6:35 mark of the quarter. A&M stretched their lead to three on a jumper by Harper before a media timeout with 4:24 remaining in the half. After a defensive battle for the last four minutes, the Lady Bulldogs went into the locker room up by one, 23-22, with Harper leading A&M in the first half with eight points and two steals.
  • After an opening score in the first minute by the Jaguars, both teams struggled to score before the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 29-26 with 5:08 to play in the quarter. Southern responded with a 6-2 run of their own before Jones knocked down a three pointer to give A&M the lead for the remainder of the third. Heading into the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs led 37-36.
  • Southern began to take control of the game as they opened the final frame on a 10-3 run to take a six-point lead at 46-40 with 4:08 to play. After a timeout, the Jaguars continued their strong play and stretched their lead to 12 at 52-40, with 2:27 to play. The Lady Bulldogs ended their long scoring drought on six straight points by Jameica Cobb, however could not complete the comeback and fell 55-46.
Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M starters: Nigeria Jones, DeShawna Harper, Jameica Cobb, Dariauna Lewis, Lazurea Saunders
  • The Lady Bulldogs shot 18-for-51 (35.3 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) from the three-point line and 8-for-12 from the charity stripe (66.7 percent).
  • Alabama A&M won the battle of the in painted area, outscoring the Lady Jaguars 26-16 in the lane during the contest.
  • The rebounding battle ended evenly, with both teams grabbing 28 total rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs grabbed nine offensive boards for 10 second chance points. Southern grabbed 10 offensive boards and also scored 10 second chance points.
  • Bench production for A&M proved to be a big factor in the contest, as they outscored the Lady Brave bench 25-13 in the matchup.
  • Turnovers: Southern won the turnover battle, forcing A&M into 20 turnovers and scored 19 points off the miscues. The Lady Jaguars turned the ball over only 12 times and allowed nine Bulldog points off of their mistakes.
