Lady Bulldogs Begin 2020 SWAC Slate with Road Trip to Grambling

The Alabama A&M women's basketball team enters Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a road contest in Louisiana against Grambling on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. The Lady Bulldogs (4-7) are 4-4 on the road, while the Tigers (1-10) are coming in with a seven-game losing streak.

This is the seventh time the two programs have met under the helm of current head coach Margaret Richards, and the fourth in the Hobdy Assembly Center. The last Lady Bulldog win in the series was a 71-64 victory on Mar. 1, 2018 in Elmore Gymnasium, as Grambling took both matchups between the two teams last season.


Opening Tip
  • Alabama A&M comes into conference play leading the SWAC in scoring offense (63.6), scoring margin and rebounding margin, led by sophomore Dariauna Lewis and her conference-leading 10.2 rebounds per game.
  • Lewis is not only one of the SWAC leaders in rebounding, but is amongst the leaders in the nation, ranking 27th in total rebounds and fourth nationally in offensive rebounds, with 5.1 per game.
  • The Lady Bulldogs are second in the SWAC in four different categories including scoring defense (66.4), field goal percentage defense (.406), free throw percentage (.670) and total rebounds per game (41.1).
  • Four different players average at least six points or more. Lewis tops the team 15.4 per game, while junior DeShawna Harper is second at 13.6 per game, followed by fellow juniors Nigeria Jones (8.5) and Tierra Dark (6.1).
  • Over the last two games, Harper has been averaging 26.5 points and 4.5 steals per game, while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor and 55.5 percent from three-point range. Lewis has also been keeping up her scoring consistency, averaging 14.5 points over the same two-game span.
About Grambling
  • The Tigers have lost nine of their last ten games, with the lone win coming on Nov. 13 at home against Centenary by a score of 106-42.
  • Grambling is currently second in the SWAC in three-point percentage (.290) and third in threes made per game at 5.1.
  • The Tigers have three players scoring in double figures. Justice Coleman leads the team at 13.7 points, Alexus Holt averages 12.3, and Ariel Williams is third with 10.4 per game.
  • Freddie Murray enters his fourth year with the team and third as head coach (2016-17 as interim) and has a 54-54 record with the program. Murray has led Grambling to two postseason tournament berths, including the 2018 NCAA Tournament and the 2017 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).

Alabama A&M will continue their conference opening road trip as they continue on to face Jackson State on Monday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to play next weekend.
