Offensive Struggles Cost Lady Bulldogs at Jackson State

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. __ Offensive struggles plagued the Alabama A&M women's basketball team Monday night in their SWAC road contest as they fell to Jackson State 67-53. The Lady Bulldogs (4-9, 0-2 SWAC) shot 31 percent from the field and under 20 percent from three as they dropped their second conference matchup of the season.
 
Forward Dariauna Lewis led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while lone senior guard Jameica Cobb added 15 points, her second straight double figure scoring game.


Quarter-by-Quarter
  • The Lady Bulldogs­­ jumped out to an 8-3 advantage in the first five minutes of the game, before the Lady Tigers battled back with a 7-0 run to take the lead at 10-8. The two teams went into the second quarter tied at 12, with Cobb leading the Lady Bulldogs with six points in the opening quarter.
  • Both teams scored to begin the second quarter, before A&M went on a 4-0 run to grow the lead to four. A four-point response by Jackson State found the game tied again before a three by the Lady Bulldogs broke the tie once more and put the score at 21-18. Later in the period, the Lady Tigers closed the half on a 6-1 run over the last three minutes of the half to put the score at 31-26 going into the locker rooms.
  • The Lady Bulldogs went on a 5-2 run to start the third, with Cobb still leading the push with three of the five. The Tigers responded with a four-point swing of their own to gain a 37-31 lead before DeShawna Harper hit a three with 2:58 to play in the frame. Jackson State responded to close out the period with three straight baskets and went into the fourth with a 43-34 lead.
  • In the final quarter, the teams traded scores before the Lady Tigers went on a 15-2 run starting at the 7:27 mark and gained a lead by as many as 23 points on their way to the victory.
Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M starters: Tierra Dark, DeShawna Harper, Jameica Cobb, Dariauna Lewis, Lazurea Saunders
  • The Bulldogs shot 22-for-69 (31.9 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from the three-point line and 6-for-10 from the charity stripe (60 percent).
  • The Lady Tigers dominated the paint area during the contest, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 44-30 in the lane.
  • The rebounding battle ended dead even at 41 each. The Lady Bulldogs grabbed 19 offensive rebounds for 31 second chance points, while the Lady Tigers grabbed 14 offensive boards for 16 second chance points of their own.
  • The Lady Tiger bench was also a key factor in the matchup as they outscored the Lady Bulldog bench 23-7.
  • Turnovers: The turnover battle also ended evenly, with both teams turning it over 21 times. A&M scored 15 points off the miscues, while Jackson State scored 25 points off of Bulldog mistakes.
