Bulldogs Struggle Offensively, Lose to Southern

Box Score HUNTSVILLE __ Offensive struggles plagued the Alabama A&M men's basketball team in a 64-37 loss in Elmore Gymnasium against Southern.

Cameron Alford was the lone Bulldog in double figures as he finished the night with 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss.


First Half
  • The Bulldogs scored the first basket of the game on the opening possession, before the Jaguars responded with five straight points and went to the benches for the first media timeout with a 5-4 lead.
  • Alabama A&M fought to tie the game at seven on a three pointer with 13:48 to play in the half, and hit another a few possessions later to take a 10-9 lead with just under 13 to play.
  • Southern responded with a run of their own, scoring nine unanswered points in route to taking an 18-10 lead, and keeping a 20-14 lead with just over nine minutes to play.
  • Southern continued to control the game going forward, gaining a 24-14 lead with 8:27 to play in the half, and stretching to a 30-16 lead with just over six minutes remaining.
  • A&M continued to struggle offensively, as they scored only five points the remainder of the half, and went into the locker room for halftime down 40-21.
Second Half
  • The Bulldogs came out to open the second half with a stop on the first possession followed by a score by Garrett Hicks.
  • Following a three-pointer by the Jaguars, the Bulldogs scored again to make the score 43-23 Southern with just over 18 minutes to play.
  • A&M regained some momentum in the game by going on a 6-0 run over the next few possessions, putting the score at 43-29, before Southern broke out of their offensive slump to score nine unanswered of their own to stretch their lead back out to over 20 points.
  • Points were scarce for the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game, as they scored only eight more points and were held to their lowest point total of the season, picking up the 64-37 loss.
Post-Game Notes
  • Alabama A&M Starters: Cameron Tucker, Garrett Hicks, Cameron Alford, Jalen Johnson, EJ Williams.
  • The Bulldogs shot 10-for-42 (23.8 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) from the three-point line and 14-for-25 from the charity stripe (56­ percent).
  • Southern won the battle in the paint, outscoring A&M in the lane 28-12 in the contest.
  • Southern won the rebounding battle 37-33. The Jaguars grabbed seven offensive rebounds, while the Bulldogs grabbed nine. Both teams scored seven second chance points on the night.
  • The Jaguar bench outscored the Bulldog bench in the matchup, producing 30 points to the nine scored by A&M.
  • Turnovers: Southern also won the turnover battle, scoring 20 points off of 19 Bulldog turnovers, while A&M scored just three points off of 12 Jaguar turnovers.
