Lady Bulldogs Continue SWAC Quest, Hit Road Against UAPB and MVSU

2/7/2020 12:03:00 PM

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Alabama A&M women's basketball team looks to continue their mission of claiming a top four seed in the SWAC Tournament as the conference season is at its half way point.

The Lady Bulldogs (9-11, 5-4 SWAC) aim to continue their strong play this weekend as they travel to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-15, 3-6 SWAC) for a 5 p.m. game Saturday, and Mississippi Valley State (2-18, 1-8 SWAC) for a 5:30 p.m. tip Monday.

Alabama A&M is tied with Alcorn currently in the standings so far, and two games behind Southern for third place in the conference. With two wins over the weekend, the Lady Bulldogs would complete the season sweep over both schools on the year.

The Lady Bulldogs are one of the top teams in the conference in rebounding the ball, currently second in the SWAC averaging 40.5 total rebounds per game on the year. They rank top-20 nationally in offensive rebounding, with 15.4 per contest.

Sophomore Dariauna Lewis, the leading scorer and rebounder, is averaging 16.9 points per game, good for second in the SWAC in scoring. Her 9.6 rebounds per game puts her not only as second in the conference, but 42nd nationally in the category. She is also ranked ninth in the country in offensive rebounding with 4.4 offensive boards per game.

A&M's second leading scorer, junior DeShawna Harper, is averaging 12.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest, and is top-10 in the conference in three-point field goals made per game. The Indianapolis native has reached double figures in 11 games this season, including a career-high 30-point performance at Memphis on Dec. 30.

UAPB will look for revenge against Alabama A&M after being defeated in Huntsville, Alabama, 74-55 earlier in the year. The Lady Bulldogs (9-11 overall, 5-4 SWAC) are coming off a big win at home defeating Prairie View, 54-44. The Lady Lions dropped a home match to the conference leader Jackson St. on Monday, 56-44. Junior Jayla Atmore led UAPB with 12 points and five steals, followed by Kyeonia Harris with nine points, while senior Noe'll Taylor added seven points.

Mississippi Valley will look to avenge an earlier loss to Alabama A&M and win consecutive games in a row for the first time all season on Monday. The Delta Devils are coming into the weekend off of a 68-57 win Monday over Grambling, ending a 12-game losing streak. MVSU is led by two double-digit scorers in Shelli Thigpen, who scores 10.1 per game and Ayonna Cotten at 10.0 per contest.
