Diaz strong in relief, baseball sweeps Mississippi Valley with 11-inning win

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Fernando Diaz Jr. could not hide the wide smile.

For good reason, too.

For the Alabama A&M right-handed pitcher, it was a good day — and even better weekend.

Diaz struck out 12 in relief as Alabama A&M rallied past Mississippi Valley State 5-4 in 11 innings, Sunday afternoon to sweep a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball series.

Alabama A&M (3-10, 3-0 in SWAC) travels to Troy on Wednesday.

In the first conference series of the season, Diaz was a major factor.

On Sunday, Diaz (1-0) struck out 12 while holding Mississippi Valley (0-10, 0-3) to six hits and one earned run in 6 2/3 inning of relief, earning his first pitching win of the season.

But for Diaz, the weekend's story is much larger than just one Sunday appearance.

Diaz appeared in relief in all three of Alabama A&M's conference games, earning saves on Friday and Saturday while striking out 18 with just one earned run in 9 2/3 innings of relief.

On the weekend, Alabama A&M's pitching staff struck out 42 against Mississippi Valley.

In the series finale, for Alabama A&M, runs were scarce early in the game. The Delta Devils tagged Alabama A&M starter Grant Mendoza for three runs early in the game, taking a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning.

Alabama A&M rallied in the bottom of the eighth. JanMikell Bastardo drove in a pair of runs with a single, and the freshman scored the game-tying run on a fielding error off the bat of Dylan Hall.

Kyle Redmond drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, pushing Grant Johnson across the plate—who was pinch running for Isom Ford, who drew a leadoff walk.

Bastardo led Alabama A&M at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Redmond and Carter Duke each had two hits and an RBI, while Pierre Brewton, Sam Mickels and Hall each had a hit and an RBI.
