Lady Bulldogs Secure Home Court in Opening Round of SWAC Tournament After Defeating Grambling Thursday Night

HUNTSVILLE __ The Alabama A&M women's basketball team defeated Grambling at home 72-52 on Thursday night to secure fourth seed in the SWAC Tournament. The win secures a top four seed and home court advantage on Tuesday in the first round of the conference tournament.
 
Forward Dariauna Lewis led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points and 11 rebounds, recording her ninth double-double of the year, while Nigeria Jones also added a double-double, her first of the season, with 15 points and 11 assists in the win.


Quarter-by-Quarter
  • The Lady Tigers of Grambling started the game up 5-2, before the Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at 6-5 with seven minutes left in the opening quarter. After trading baskets, A&M went into the first media timeout at the 4:47 mark leading 10-9. Minutes later, the Lady Tigers made a corner three on their last possession of the quarter to tie the ball game at 14 heading into the second quarter.
  • After finding the game tied again at 16 with 8:36 to play in the quarter, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run over the next few possessions before the Tigers responded to pull the game back to within five at 25-20 with 5:24 remaining in the half. A&M responded by scoring seven unanswered and also forced a shot clock violation before Jackson State got back on the board to make the score 32-22 with just under two remaining before a score by Elexis Evans on the final possession gave the Lady Bulldogs the lead, 34-22, heading into the locker room.
  • The Lady Bulldogs outscored Grambling 7-2 over the first three minutes of the second half, and continued to control momentum, leading 45-27 at the 5:56 mark of the third. Grambling responded to go on a 9-3 run from that moment until a media timeout with just over three minutes to go in the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs came out of the break to hold the Lady Tigers to just five more points in the quarter to head into the final frame with a 55-41 lead.
  • A&M controlled the rest of the game, starting the final quarter by scoring six points to two by Grambling to go up 61-43 in the first four minutes of the frame. The Lady Bulldogs stretched their lead to 20 points at the five-minute mark and finished the ball game on a high note, winning 72-52.

  • The Lady Bulldogs shot 25-for-46 (54.3 percent) from the field as a team for the game, 1-for-7 (14.3 percent) from the three-point line and 21-for-35 from the charity stripe (60.0 percent).
  • Alabama A&M dominated the battle of the painted area, outscoring Grambling 44-22 in the lane during the contest.
  • The Lady Bulldogs also won the rebounding battle in the matchup, outrebounding the Lady Tigers 36-21. A&M grabbed 13 offensive boards compared to the 11 for Grambling. Both ended with six second chance points.
  • Bench production proved equal in the contest, as both bench units provided 18 points to their respective teams.
  • Turnovers: A&M also won the turnover battle, forcing Grambling into 15 turnovers and scored 23 points off the miscues. The Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over 10 times and allowed six points off of their mistakes.
