Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer Knocks Off Southern 3-0 In SWAC Action

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (6-7-1, 5-1-0 SWAC) delivered a pair of goals in the first half that fueled a 3-0 victory over Southern (5-8-1, 3-3-0 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, October 22.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute as junior forward Jameela Barrett (London, England) would take it herself and connected the ball to the back left corner of the net for a 1-0 margin at 12:35. Five minutes later AAMU would extend their lead as junior forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) would drive the ball over the keeper into the middle of the net at the 17:50 mark.

Over the next 27 minutes defense would rule the day as neither team would generate any offense and would head to the half with that two goal margin.

Alabama A&M started the second half similar to the first, firing off seven shots before a pair of familiar faces teamed up again as Barrett found Rushing. The latter proceeded to fire the ball to the top left corner of the goal at 76:06 and would be the last goal of the game as the Bulldogs closed out the 3-0 decision.

Rushing fueled the offense for A&M with a pair of goals while Barrett had one score and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) played all 90 minutes, making seven saves to secure the shutout and moves to 6-7-1.

Surya Nero and Aniya Clark led the way for the Jaguars, notching two shots on goal apiece. Chioma Eriken anchored the defense as she went the distance making seven saves and allowing three goals to fall to 4-8-1.

The Bulldogs will take the field again on Sunday, October 22 as they take on Jackson State. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Bulldog Field.

NOTES
Game time for the Jackson State game was originally slated for 12 p.m. but has been pushed back to 1 p.m.
