Alabama A&M Falls 1-0 to Alabama-Huntsville In Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A first half goal proved to be the difference as Alabama A&M (0-1, 0-0 SWAC) fell 1-0 to Alabama-Huntsville (2-1, 0-1 GSC) in a NCAA women's soccer game on Wednesday, February 24.

After balanced back-and-forth play over the first eight minutes, junior forward Tehya Beadles (Sacramento, Calif.) attempted the first shot of the game at the 33-minute mark that was saved, however the Bulldogs gained a corner kick seconds later.

Sophomore forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) got a shot on goal that was blocked, giving A&M another corner kick with 29:27 to go in the first.

With just over 28 minutes remaining in the opening frame, the Chargers attempted two consecutive shots on goal, the first by Brynn Colvin wide right while the attempt from Carmen Endicott was saved by senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.), her first of the game.

Rushing got off three more shots over the next 15 minutes – two saved and one wide right – however, UAH would be the first on the board as a goal from Melanie Brannon opened the scoring at the 9:11 mark to put the Chargers up 1-0.

At the 8:26 mark senior forward Braejah Washington (Dallas, Texas) attempted a shot on goal that was saved, followed by a blocked attempt from junior midfielder Sherice Clarke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) with 5:16 to go in the first. Medina recorded another save on the final shot of the half at the 2:08 mark, as the Bulldogs went into the break trailing 1-0.

The two teams continued the tight battle into the second half as neither team attempted a shot on goal until a header that went wide left from sophomore forward Regan Ely (Knoxville, Tenn.) with just under 70 minutes remaining.

The shot by Ely would be the Bulldogs' 10th and final shot of the game, as they would gain no further serious threats in the 1-0 loss.

Brannon led the Chargers with the lone goal of the game while Colvin attempted a game-high five shots, including three on goal. Carmen Endicott also attempted two shots on goal.

Rushing led the Bulldogs with a team-high four shots, with two being on goal, while Washington attempted two shots, including one on goal on the afternoon. Medina finished the match with seven saves.

The Bulldogs will host Grambling State on Friday, March 5 to open conference play at Bulldog Field.
