Alabama A&M Falls 22-2 on the Road to Open Series at the UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) put up a pair of runs in the seventh inning however it would be all UAB (3-2, 0-0 C-USA) this afternoon as the Bulldogs fell 22-2 in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Friday, February 26.
 
UAB found their bats early, as Tyler Johnston singled to right field and scored after C Shultz hit a two-run homer on the next at bat. After a score from J Fullerton off an error, the Blazers extended their lead to 6-0 after homer from J Mullins and later increased the lead to 8-0 before the end of the inning.
 
After adding a single run in the bottom of the third, UAB had another breakout inning in the bottom of the fifth as they scored six runs to extend their lead to 15-0 heading into the sixth frame.
 
A&M would get on the board in the seventh as freshman Malik Frails (Harlem, Ga.) reached first base on a passed ball and reached third after a double from senior designated hitter Isom Ford (Birmingham, Ala.) to put two runners in scoring position.
 
Freshman outfielder Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) brought both runners home with a double to right field, however was left on base after two flyouts to finish the top half of the inning.
 
The Bulldogs would give up seven runs over the remainder of the contest to fall 22-2 to the Blazers in the first game of the three-game series.
 
Bastardo produced both of A&M's RBIs on the day as part of a 2-for-2 performance while freshman outfielder Teddy Bridges (Montgomery, Ala.), Ford and senior first baseman Brock Mitchell (Brownsboro, Ala.) earned the remaining hits for the Bulldogs, with Ford and Frails scoring the only runs.
Sophomore pitcher Jose Figueroa (Toa Alta, Peurto Rico) started and took the loss for the Bulldogs to drop to 0-1 as he faced 29 batters on the night.
 
For UAB, Caleb Floyd went 4-for-7 along with batting in five RBIS and scoring four runs while Davis, Johnston and John Marc Mullins each batted in three runs each. Riley Davis got the start for the Blazers, throwing seven innings and delivering nine strikeouts and just one earned run to move to 1-1 on the year.
 
The Bulldogs and Blazers will continue their three-game tomorrow as they retake the field at 2 p.m. at Jerry D. Young Memorial Field.
