HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A complete game by junior
Josue Torres (Cidra, Puerto Rico) and an early homerun fueled Alabama A&M's (3-12, 3-7 SWAC) 3-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State (0-14, 0-11 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Friday, April 16.
The Delta Devils would get on the board first as they built a run in the top of the second, taking advantage of a hit by pitch, a ground out that moved the runner to second and a double by Ty Washington that made it 1-0. That would be all they would get, however, as Torres settled in.
With that performance on the mound, the Bulldogs were able to focus in at the plate and put it all together in the third inning. A one-out single by senior shortstop
Pierre Brewton (Madison, Ala.), compounded by a two-base error that put him at third, combined with a double down the left field line by freshman outfielder
Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) tied the game up at 1-1.
Following a strikeout that put MVSU within reach of getting out of the inning without further damage, junior outfielder
Teddy Bridges (Montgomery, Ala.) made sure that damage would come about as he belted a two-run homerun to left for a 3-1 lead.
Over the remaining six innings Torres would be in command as he scattered five hits, never more than one an inning, as A&M cruised to the two-run victory.
Bridges led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-4 day that included a homerun and a pair of RBIs while Bastardo was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Brewton added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and Torres went the distance on the hill, throwing all nine innings and allowing just one run against seven strikeouts. He improves to 1-0 on the year.
Washington went 2-for-4 with a double and the lone RBI for the Delta Devils while Mychael Jamison was 2-for-4. Andrew Harris laced a double and scored the run as part of a 1-for-3 day to round out the offense and Isaiah Valenzuela went seven innings, surrendering all three runs and striking out six. He falls to 0-3 in 2021.
Alabama A&M continues their four-game set with MVSU with a seven-inning doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 17 and a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday, April 18.
