HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – An eight run first inning and lockdown pitching was too much to overcome as Alabama A&M (2-11, 2-6 SWAC) dropped a 15-0 decision to rival Alabama State (10-13, 7-4 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Friday, April 2.
Eight hits, including a two-run homerun, led to eight first inning runs to set the tone for the night as the Hornets took control of the game early. They would build upon the offensive outburst with five more hits and runs in the top of the third, fueled by a pair of long balls, to extend to a 13-0 advantage. ASU would add solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings before closing out the 15-0 affair.
Senior designated hitter
Isom Ford (Birmingham, Ala.) delivered the Bulldogs lone hit, going 1-for-2 with a single in the bottom of the second while freshman outfielder
Janmikell Bastardo (Fort Myers, Fla.) and sophomore catcher
Dillon Roop (New Market, Ala.) each added a walk. Senior pitcher
Michael Hovermill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) went two thirds of an inning, allowing seven earned runs to suffer the loss and drop to 0-3.
Trenton Jamison went 3-for-5 with a homerun, triple and three RBIs to pace Alabama State while Jabronski Williams was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Cristopher DeGuzman finished 4-for-5 with and RBI and two runs while Breon Pooler threw all seven innings, allowing just the one hit and no runs while striking out seven.
Alabama A&M will close out the series with the Hornets tomorrow, Saturday, April 3. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Bulldog Field.
