Alabama A&M Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision at Alabama State in 95th Minute

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a battle of teams riding significant unbeaten streaks, Alabama A&M (4-4, 4-3 SWAC) barely dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at rival Alabama State (6-2-1, 6-0-1 SWAC) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Friday, April 2.

The teams would combine for 10 shots in the first half, with the Hornets taking seven of those, but none would find the back of the net as the clubs would head to the half deadlocked at 0-0.

That would be something that would change just under 20 minutes into the second half, however, as ASU's Rylee Stoehner found Kassandra Schoen in front of the net. She would then put one hard and low to the middle of the goal for a 1-0 lead at the 64:15 mark.

Having given up their first goal in nearly 377 minutes the Bulldogs didn't hang their heads but instead responded right away. That would come in the form of sophomore forward Jameela Barrett (London, England) just 2:09 later as she took it herself to knot it up at 1-1 at the 66:24 mark.

Following that offensive outburst both teams went back to lockdown defense and would not allow a score over the next 23-plus minutes, sending the game to overtime. In that extra frame there would be just one shot and it would be off the foot of Grace Norbury as she took a pass from Isabella Beortegui and drove it home for the game-winner at the 94:45 mark.

Barrett led A&M with their lone goal of the night while junior midfielder Sherice Clark (St. Catherine, Jamaica) fired off four shots, putting one on frame. Senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) played all 94:45, allowing a pair of scores while making five saves. She finishes the season at 4-4 overall.

Norbury and Schoen paced ASU with a goal apiece while McKenna Wiscombe put three of her four shots on frame. In net, Madison Ropp went the distance, making a pair of saves and surrendering just the one score.

The Bulldogs close out the most unique season in program history at 4-4 overall and 4-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play and with three shutouts to their credit.

NOTES
A&M had not allowed a goal in 377 minutes dating back to a score by Jackson State in the 47th minute of a game on March 12.
