HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In a return to the more traditional rite of Spring, and the continuation of longstanding academic excellence, Alabama A&M Athletics produced 36 current or former student-athletes that earned their degree and crossed the stage at the Spring 2021 Commencement, on Friday, April 30.
This year's graduates represent football (9), women's soccer (4), women's basketball (3), softball (3), women's volleyball (3), baseball (2), men's basketball (2), men's tennis (2), women's tennis (2), men's track & field (2), women's track & field (2), bowling (1) and men's golf (1).
Earning degrees from football were
Steven Charles (Logistics and Supply Chain Management),
Spencer Corey (Electrical Engineering),
Denzel Davis (Business Management),
Dexter Fuqua II (Computer Science),
Anthony Howard (Mechanical Engineering),
Abram Jones (Electrical Engineering),
Justin Mitchell (Business Management),
Maurese Smith (Liberal Studies, Sport Management),
Dylan Swanson (Liberal Studies, Sport Management).
Women's soccer saw the quartet of
Ayanna Gooden (Biology),
Jodi Medina (Computer Science),
Khadijah Shakirof (Biology) and
Braejah Washington (Animal Bio Health Sciences) while women's basketball had Alexis Evans (Liberal Studies/Sport Management Concentration),
Nigeria Jones (Political Science) and
Deshawna Harper (Sport Management) earn degrees.
Just hours before taking the field,
Dorian Edwards (Biology),
Raina Mayfield (Biology) and
Haleigh Winter (Elementary Education) crossed the stage for softball and women's volleyball's
Maya Evans (Criminal Justice), Meghan Evans (Criminal Justice) and
Jayla Norman (Liberal Studies/Sport Management Concentration) joined them.
Baseball saw
Michael Hovermill (Sociology) and
Brandon Moore (Business Management) earn degrees as did
Brandon Houston (Marketing) and
Evan Wiley (Finance) of men's basketball and Fermin Ruiz-Crespo (Civil Engineering) and
Panji Setiawan (Liberal Studies/Management Information Systems Concentration) of men's tennis.
Women's tennis'
Nthabiseng Mashego (Mechanical Engineering) and
Ayana Rengiil (Electrical Engineering) added to the total as did
Christian Bryant (Psychology) and
Donald Weakley (Sport Management) for men's track & field.
Their counterparts of
Terion Davis (Criminal Justice) and
Precious Haynes (Sport Management) earned their degrees for women's track & field and
Daphne Price (Business Management) of bowling and
Nylan Washington (Computer Science Management) of men's golf rounded out a massive class for the Bulldogs.
"This is a special graduating class," said Director of Athletics
Bryan Hicks. "Despite the pandemic and changes that brought about pauses in their athletic seasons, and changes with their course instruction method, they have exemplified excellence and perseverance. We are very proud of them and wish them much success in their future endeavors."
Alabama A&M University, located in Huntsville, Alabama, currently offers 16 sports as well as cheerleading and is a member of NCAA Division I. The Bulldogs have more than 340 student-athletes competing for championships at the national, regional and conference level with each program being members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
