HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With three years left if he wants them, the sky seems to be the limit for Alabama A&M sophomore wide receiver
Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Miramar, Fla.) as he has earned his fourth career All-American honor as he was named to the Hero Sports FCS Sophomore All-American Team by that organization on Wednesday, May 19.
It is the second All-American recognition in less than a week for the second-year deep threat as the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) named him to their Second-Team on Friday, May 14, making him just the fourth all-time and second in the NCAA Division I Era. He has also previously earned Spring 2021 BOXTOROW All-American honors and a spot on the Hero Sports FCS Freshman All-American in 2019.
A former a tryout participant and freshman walk-on two years ago, Ibrahim has raked in the hardware at the league level as well, picking up All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) First-Team honors both years, was named SWAC Freshman of the Year (2019) by both the league and football writer Phil Steele and was named to the latter's All-SWAC First-Team that same season.
Ibrahim continues to justify all those lofty accolades as he helped lead the Bulldogs to only their second SWAC Championship (first in 15 years), their second undefeated season in 53 years and the first ever Spring 2021 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) National Championship. A&M last won the SWAC in 2006 and went a perfect 8-0 in 1966.
In a year that was anything but typical and included an unintended layoff of more than 30 days at one point, the speedy wideout amassed 338 yards on 24 grabs (14.1 ypc) and found the endzone three times. On the season he averaged 84.5 yards per game for one of the most prolific offenses in the country.
He opened the year with six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown in a 31-7 road win at South Carolina State and followed that up with five grabs for 94 yards and a pair of scores in a 52-43 shootout victory at Jackson State that aired live to a worldwide audience on ESPN on April 10.
Ibrahim capped the regular season by snagging seven balls for 102 yards against rival Alabama State in the Magic City Classic a week later before hauling in six catches for 61 yards in the Bulldogs multi-championship clinching 40-33 victory over No. 25 Arkansas-Pine Bluff on May 1.
One of the most talented young receivers in the nation at the FCS level, Ibrahim is the only SWAC player on the Hero Sports FCS Sophomore All-American Team and is one of two players from the HBCU ranks, being joined by Tennessee State defensive lineman Davoan Hawkins.
A&M and Ibrahim return to action this fall beginning with the first of five home games on September 4 when they host South Carolina State at Louis Crews Stadium. Stay tuned to
