Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer Defeats Alcorn State 1-0 In SWAC Action

LORMAN, Miss. – Alabama A&M (3-6-1, 2-0-0 SWAC) locked in defensively for 90 minutes as they defeated Alcorn State (2-9-1, 0-2-0 SWAC) 1-0 in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Sunday, September 26.

The Bulldogs applied pressure throughout the first half, recording four shots on goal. Only one would find the back of the net but it would be the difference maker as junior forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas) took a feed from junior defender Taylor Watson (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) and then proceeded to bury the ball to the back middle of the net for a 1-0 margin at the 31:23-minute mark.

Over the next 14 minutes, neither team would generate any offense and would head to the half with that one goal margin.

The Bulldogs started the second half similar to the first, with junior forward Laura Jansa (Barcelona, Spain) firing a shot on goal at the 53:49 mark before the Braves responded back-to-back shots by Emily Serrato and D'ana Prieto. The first one resulted in a block while senior goalkeeper Jodi Medina (Coral Springs, Fla.) saved the other.

At the 62:11 minute-mark senior midfielder Sherice Clarke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) would strike at the bottom left side of the goal only to see it saved. That would be the last attempt by the team from the Rocket City while Alcorn State would have the final shot of the game as Aliyah Taylor drove the ball towards the net but it would not connect with less than four minutes left.

Rushing fueled the offense for the Bulldogs with one goal, while Clarke finished with two shots on frame. Medina played all 90 minutes, making five saves to secure the shutout and moves 3-6-1 on the year.

Rosalina Santaro, Charlie Bal and Serrato led the offense for the Braves, all notching two shots with one on goal. Vivian Lugo anchored the defense, as she went the distance playing all ninety minutes with four saves and giving up one goal and moves to 1-7-0.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, October 5 as they return home to tackle Prairie View A&M. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
