BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M football continued a program tradition as they earned three selections to the 2022 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Team as announced by the league on Tuesday, November 29.
Earning Second-Team spots on this year's team were junior defensive end Zareon Hayes (Dillon, S.C.), sophomore running back Donovan Eaglin (Houston, Texas) and senior offensive lineman Jonathan Williams (Mobile, Ala.).
With those selections, the Bulldogs have now earned at least one in 23 consecutive seasons dating back to 2000 and have had multiple honorees in 21 of those years.
SECOND-TEAM DEFENSIVE END – ZAREON HAYES
Hayes announced himself as one of the most dominant defensive lineman at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level in his first year at A&M after transferring from Appalachian State.
In 10 games he registered 53 total tackles, making 30 solo and taking up residence in the backfield more than the opposing teams running back as he accounted for 16.5 tackles for loss. The latter was good for seventh in the nation with an average of 1.7 to go along with his 3.5 sacks.
Individually he recorded a TFL in eight of his 10 games, including a whopping 4.5 against rival Alabama State (10/29) in the Magic City Classic. Those would be among eight total tackles he would have in that contest, including a half a sack.
SECOND-TEAM RUNNING BACK – DONOVAN EAGLIN
A transfer from Michigan State, Eaglin was a force to be reckoned with as he finished with 873 yards rushing (5.1) and six touchdowns. He also had eight receptions for 73 yards and a TD after taking over the lead role in the backfield in the fifth game of the season.
He would surpass 100 yards rushing five times, including 190 with two scores and two catches for 23 yards and a TD vs. Bethune-Cookman (10/1). That performance earned him both BOXTOROW National and SWAC Player of the Week. Eaglin followed that with another two score game with 126 yards against Grambling (10/8).
SECOND-TEAM OFFENSIVE LINEMAN – JONATHAN WILLIAMS
Williams played in 10 games, starting nine, and as a unit, the offensive line cleared the way for one of the top possession offenses in the country, not just the SWAC.
Alabama A&M led the league in time of possession (33:24) and ranked No. 10 in the country while blocking for the fourth leading rusher in the SWAC. That would be Eaglin who finished with 873 yards on 171 carries for an average of 5.1 – all of which came in the last seven games after taking over lead tailback duties
HONORS HISTORY
Williams earns his second All-Conference nod following Second-Team recognition following the Spring 2021 campaign. For Eaglin and Hayes it is their first such honor with this being their first year as Bulldogs.
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M will return in 2023 having closed out the 2022 campaign with a 4-7 record.
